What are the Pros and Cons of Quartz Countertops?

Available in nearly every color and style, quartz countertops are a modern and stylish addition to a kitchen. Like many other things in life, there are pros and cons to quartz countertops that homeowners should weigh before installing them.

How are quartz countertops made?

Quartz countertops, more properly referred to as “engineered quartz countertops,” are made from a combination of natural quartz and flexible resins. This combination gives you a countertop with the style and strength of marble, but more forgiving and with many more installation possibilities.

The countertops are made by combining about 90% to 95% quartz with a man-made resin that is formed into a non-porous slab. Quartz itself is an extremely durable stone. The added resin can have pigments mixed in that allow you to choose from nearly any color and style.

Pros of Quartz Countertops

These are very attractive countertops that can fit into almost any decor. The price is comparable with granite, marble, and slate, putting it in the high-end of price and quality of countertops.

Because quartz is available in a myriad of styles, this contemporary type of countertop can fit into even the most traditional spaces. For example, a new style that is quite popular is a high-gloss white countertop that looks a lot like white marble, but is much easier to clean and maintain.

Quartz countertops tend to chip and crack less easily than concrete or granite. It feels slightly less hard and severe to the touch than marble and granite do.

Because the surface is non-porous, cleanup is easier and bacteria can’t get into the countertop. This makes it a better choice in houses with less safety-conscious members, like young people, who are likely to use it and reuse it without disinfecting it.

Cons of Quartz Countertops

Because this is a man-made material, there really aren’t many downsides to quartz countertops. The negatives are mostly engineered out.

The price is not as attractive as one might hope, being right in line with granite and marble. Since money is often a consideration in the redecorating process, this price can be a deterrent.

Quartz, although it is available in many colors, still has a contemporary feel. This might be a turnoff for homeowners who would prefer a more traditional look. Quartz countertops also tend to have visible seams, but for most people, that’s not really an issue.

Finally, quartz countertops aren’t as heat-resistant as concrete or granite, so there is a need for a bit of caution when placing hot pots and pans onto them.

Quartz Countertops are a Great Choice

Engineered quartz countertops are a great choice for someone who wants more control over the color and feel of their kitchen than granite or marble might provide. Highly durable and easy to clean and care for, quartz also makes a great choice for families where some members might be a bit ruthless with the countertops.
